A series of jewelery made between 1973 and '83 by Mathijs Teunissen van Manen and Leo Cahn. It arose from a study to make the smallest possible flash with a large working time.
The first were "Badges" and were made entirely by hand, the genius of the design was that the electronic components themselves were the basis of the construction, the IC that had exactly the same thickness as a battery had unused feet where the battery strip soldered, and by smart bending of the legs of the Led and the necessary capacitor, (for the connoisseurs: LM3909 ledflasher in an 8 pins dil housing) later some insect constructions for reinforcement got another diode which was then wrong way round used.
The insects were created entirely as in nature and they evaluated themselves to defy the dangers of safety belt and legs that couldn’t break off. The very first insect arose because Mathijs pushed a solder experiment into a cochlea, the LEDs that looked like real techno eyes at the time and all kinds of wires were still out, and it was a Heremite lobster, He called him Boris, and Boris still hot from the soldering iron was sold to Kho Lieang Ie (an industrial designer best known as for the design of Schiphol) He just came to visit us in the Koestraat and refused to leave without Boris .

This resulted in a series of "Small Insectoidea" and was finally photo-chemically etched from stainless steel sheet, a technique we had learned ourselves and can be seen as a predecessor of CNC milling. That etching is done from both sides of the plate making it easy to place fold lines and texts.
First we made design drawings in large format and by means of photography this was reduced and exposed and etched on the light-sensitive plate. There is a rare booklet with that whole series, LeoMat "Small Insectoidae". We had great success with this design and sold around the world. especially after good exhibitions at Galerie Ra in Amsterdam, the Cooper Hewitt museum in New York, Galerie Novelle Image Den Haag, and the Kapelhuis te Amersfoort and publications in, among others, the Dutch Avenue and the Italian "Domus". In total, we would consume 8000 ICs. 1983 was the last year that we made them.
Mathijs Theunissen van Manen passed away in 2007.
